I've been thinking recently about a dirty little habit of mine. No I don't smoke or do drugs or have any serious addictions (apart from my daily Starbucks). Nope, my habit is that I harbour knowledge.

I'm not going to qualify how or what I know here but just voice that I'm torn between sharing or keeping it to myself. I guess I just don't like the idea of someone using information I put out there to benefit themselves. Is it selfish? Probably. Is it smart? I can't decide.

If you knew the best way to do something, or had a theory that you didn't have time to test yourself, would you want to share it with the world, or would you keep it to yourself until you were ready to use that information yourself.

Or perhaps you know a trick, a secret back door or a way to beat the system, you could gain respect and popularity by sharing, but how long before everyone knows the secret and is using the same trick, your "way to beat the system" is no longer insider knowledge and is blocked to prevent exploitation.

    This is my dilemma.

Always thought these two sounded similar so I knocked something up. (Actually I knocked it up a few years ago, but just trying to consolidate blogs, hence the repost)

While I think USB drive encryption is fantastic and do this to all my drives (sometimes out of choice, sometimes because its corporate policy), the way most encryption programs are implemented is currently flawed.

Microsoft BitLocker and Securewave Sanctuary for example, both encrypt files on corporate PCs so anyone on a different OS or on non corporate computer gets two options, browse the files, or if they want to actually work with the drive - decrypt it, or worse, copy all the files off and onto an (unencrypted) Hard Drive.

This creates more unencrypted copies, and more copies = More Risk, why the encrypted versions of drives don't give you the option to install software to mount the drive properly, I don't know, I'm guessing its licence restrictions.

TrueCrypt is free and open source, and does it right... install it on any computer and you can work on your encrypted files seamlessly, the only issues are that firstly, its not for novices, too many options and decisions to make, secondly the drives don't always auto mount, so occasionally you forget and work on the non-encrypted partition.  Finally, if you try putting a TrueCrypt drive into a corporate machine, Sanctuary will try and encrypt over the top.

Drive encryption has definitely taken a step forward over the last few years, but its still miles away from being actually useful.

Sainsbury's recently introduced printing Point of sale loyalty vouchers and mobile top up vouchers.

Tesco print lottery tickets on till receipts and know online what your favourite in store purchases are.

Starbucks know you're registered online and give you discounts like free extras.

Opens up a world of marketing possibilities!

It's a nice touch, while you're waiting for your YouTube upload to finish processing, you get a little scrolling Ajax window showing you the progress. Nice.
